Challenge

People love honey, but they don’t necessarily want to drink something called mead. The challenge was to build a brand that felt fresh, inclusive, and instantly understandable on shelf – something with craft at its heart, but the energy of the mainstream.

Context

The product that would go on to be Honey Thief had craftsmanship, flavour, and story in abundance, but to reach a new audience, it needed a modern identity that could compete in the fast-moving world of RTDs and premium drinks.

The solution

Before design began, we created a brand strategy that reimagined how honey-based drinks could live in today’s culture. At the core of that thinking was a new name and narrative – Honey Thief. The name captured both the playful spirit of the product and the natural source of its appeal.

We developed a new brand world anchored on a brown bear named Arthur – once native to the UK and a timeless symbol of warmth, curiosity, and of course, honey. The only brown bear still “living” in the wild, Arthur is regularly sighted everywhere from Cornish campsites to Highland honey farms, attempting to get his paws on honey. His forays into honey theft always end with sticky paws and a stung snout, and this goofy charm, curiosity, and gentle humour became the storytelling engine for the Honey Thief brand world.

The personality was further brought to life through the strapline “Naughty by Nature”, celebrating both the natural origin of the product and its mischievous, feel-good tone.

The brand tone of voice is conversational, confident, and just a little mischievous – bridging the warmth of natural craft with the energy of modern lifestyle branding. Every element, from the packaging design to the launch copy, reflects the brand’s playful character and authentic roots.

With the brand strategy and character in place, we built a complete visual and verbal identity around Arthur’s world. The design combines golden light and tactile textures with bold, confident simplicity, ensuring standout at shelf and flexibility across digital environments.

Result

The result was a drinks brand that doesn’t rely on history or heritage but instead celebrates natural joy, curiosity, and connection – a honey-based brand made for now.

Honey Thief quickly showed how powerful the right story can be. Within three months of launch, the brand secured listings with Ocado and began conversations with Waitrose, Whole Foods, Total Wine, and Walmart.

Retailers described it as “something completely new” – a category disruptor that delivered both credibility and charm. The same liquid, in the same bottle, suddenly had mass-market appeal – proving that brand clarity and emotional resonance can transform commercial outcomes.

Thank you
